How to use the interval trainer

Understand the playback modes

Interval recognition asks for the actual distance between the notes. Harmonic plays them together; Melodic Asc plays low to high; Melodic Desc plays high to low. Reversing playback order does not change the answer.

Use Select All or Clear to choose playback modes quickly. The interval list includes Minor 9th (♭9), an actual 13-semitone distance.

Root-relative practice

This separate exercise keeps the reference above the other note. First you hear the reference alone, then the pair harmonically or melodically. Answer the lower note’s relationship to the reference, not the distance between the notes.

For example, with C as the reference and E♭ below it, choose ♭3 · Minor 3rd. E♭ is the ♭3 relative to C, but the sounding distance is a major sixth. Feedback explains both. The reference cue plays on every replay.

Minor 9th is available only in Interval recognition: its pitch-class relationship in this exercise would be indistinguishable from ♭2. Your selection is retained when switching exercises.

Older shared inverted questions retain their exact notes and original playback, with an explicit legacy explanation. New questions use the separate exercises above.

Switch between guitar and piano

Use the Guitar / Piano switch in the Bebop Workshop header or the app’s Instrument menu. They stay linked: changing either one changes the other. The selected instrument controls both the display and the playback sound.

Play instrument to explore is on by default. Click or tap keys or fret positions to hear notes, or focus them and press Enter or Space. Playing before answering marks that question as assisted and excludes it from accuracy and streaks. Leaving the option on without using it does not affect scoring. You can turn it off in Settings.

Phone landscape: the instrument and answer choices fill the main view. Choose Settings to change playback modes, interval rotation, instrument, volume, or auto advance, then choose Done to return to the question.

Hints and Easy mode

Hint

Reveals the two positions without their labels. After you use a hint, that guess is not saved in your stats.

Easy mode

Shows the two unlabeled positions as soon as each question begins. These questions are assisted and not scored. Choose Hint to add the labels.

Control what happens after an answer

With Auto advance on, the next question is generated after the number of seconds in Advance time. Turn Auto advance off when you want each revealed answer to remain until you choose Generate New Interval. Replaying during the countdown pauses it until playback finishes.

Read your results

Session Summary shows attempts, accuracy, and streaks since this page was opened. All Time uses the saved results in this browser. Open View Stats for totals by playback mode and interval, or to clear the saved totals.
